Amelia Earhart and coconut crabs

By trendman | Oct 26, 2009

It seems that the legend of Amelia Earhart just won’t die. With news pending about a movie on America’s most famous female aviator, a lot of hype is being made about the life of this famous pilot. Speculations over what happened to Amelia have persisted for the past 5 decades and today the line between fiction and fact have disappeared.

The latest word is that Amelia probably crashed on the uninhabited island of Nikumaroro in the southern pacific. A number of artifacts have been identified which suggest that this could be the final resting place of the Amelia. The researchers speculate that Amelia and her navigator, Fred Noonan, most likely succumbed to the hostile environmental conditions on the island. Some claim that Amelia and Noonan probably died from eating poisoned fish, dehydration, infection or suffered serious injury during the plane crash.

However, the latest is that Amelia and Noonan may have been eaten by the coconut crabs. These large crabs which are capable of cracking a coconut with their pincers may have eaten her body. The island of Nikumaroro is indeed home to  large variety of crabs, including the coconut crabs.

What is not known is whether Amelia ever had a chance to eat these tasty crabs!
