On October 8th, a legend comes to the big screen. Disney’s Secretariat is the life story of the Triple Crown winning horse. Secretariat still holds the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes record for the fastest recorded time. When he competed in 1973, Secretariat was the first to win the Triple Crown in 25 years. This feat has only been equaled ten other times since the Triple Crown’s inception over 125 years ago.
The movie stars Diane Lane as Secretariat’s owner, and John Malkovich, as the trainer for the legendary horse. The movie spends equal time on the amazing story of the horse and the tenacious life of Penny Chenery. In a sport dominated by males, Chenery believed that her horse was a true champion and she had the fighting spirit to make sure that he delivered in each race everything that he was capable of. Her passion for Secretariat and his abilities led to the horse’s immortality.
Secretariat was truly an amazing horse. When he passed away in 1989 at the age of 19, an autopsy revealed that he had a heart two and a half times the size of the average race horse. Because of this fact, Secretariat’s speed records will probably never be broken.

POM Wonderful attacked by FTC
There is some bad news for those of us who love pomegranate juice. A report issued by the FTC registers a complaint against POM Wonderful, indicating that the tasty juice is not as good for you as POM has led us to believe. The report claims that there is absolutely no proof that pomegranate prevents or fights disease. This is contrary to the product’s label, which claims that it helps prevent heart disease, prostate cancer, and erectile dysfunction. The FTC is currently seeking an order from a judge to prevent POM from making these claims.
The juice makers have vehemently opposed the FTC’s report. They claim that the report is erroneous and “completely unwarranted.” They went on to purport that the FTC is wasting tax dollars with their attack on POM and is improperly using their authority. POM also claims that they have the research to back up the statement on product labels.
BlackBerry to Release Tablet Computer
BlackBerry will soon be coming out with a product to compete with Apple’s iPad tablet computer. The RIM BlackBerry Playbook will be released soon tapping into a market that so far has been dominated by Apple. Designed by Research in Motion, this computer tablet has a 7 inch slate, a 1 GHz dual-core processor, and a QNX operating system. Amazon’s Kindle will also have compatible software for the Playbook available for no additional cost to customers.
Other names for this computer that were ultimately shot down included the BlackPad and the SurfBook. This product will most likely not be released until early 2011. As of right now, no price has been associated with the Playbook.
UFC Fight
UFC 119 has officially concluded, and the main event winner has been crowned. Frank Mir walked away with the victory in the last match of the night due to a late-round knockout over Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic. Still, many critics are disappointed in the fight due to a lack of artful fighting. The majority of the match involved the contestants pushing each other against the cage. Although Mir walked away victorious, even he was not happy with his performance, commenting “…I’m completely pissed off about my performance.”
Mir’s win will allow him to be pitted against a major heavyweight name for his next fight, but whether he will be competitive is a different story. In the past, Mir has relied heavily on ground submissions. Filipovic, a stand-up fighter with a weak floor game, held Mir off for much longer than he was expected to, an indication that Mir may have some major flaws in his fighting.
UFC 120 will be held October 16 in London, England. The headline fight will be Michael Bisping against Yoshihiro Akiyama, with Bisping being the heavy favorite at this point.

The film “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps” will be released today, and is expected to be one of the best movies of the year. This marks director Oliver Stone’s first sequel, for which he used a $70 million filming budget. The new film stars Michael Douglas and Shia LaBeouf, and is a story of greed, love, and the stock market. Gordon Gekko (Douglas) has just been released from prison and wants to reconcile differences with his daughter. His daughter’s fiance, a young stock trader named Jacob (LaBeouf), goes to Gekko in order to get revenge on the person who was involved with his former mentor’s death.
Director Stone wanted the movie to be as true to real life as possible and as a result, he filmed this movie at the Federal Reserve Building where many of the 2008 crash discussions were held by stock traders. The original “Wall Street” was released in 1987 and also starred Michael Douglas.
Netflix Puts BlockBuster Down
Blockbuster is hoping to turn around its business by declaring Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The movie rental company has already closed over 1,000 stores nationwide, but has still been struggling due to other, more convenient types of rentals such as Netflix or Redbox. Blockbuster has been trying to stay competitive with these companies by offering rentals through the mail and in digital format. The movie rental industry has changed dramatically over the last few years, and Blockbuster’s filing for bankruptcy did not come as a surprise.
Chapter 11 would erase over $1 billion of debt that the company is facing. The vast majority of this debt is owed to major motion picture studios such as Warner Bros., 20th Century Fox, Disney, and Sony. The remaining open stores will likely stay open during the bankruptcy process as long as things go well in court for the company. It is expected that the company’s new focus will be more on kiosks and digital movies.
The Grand Opening of the Sugarhouse Casino
The Sugarhouse Casino opened today an hour and a half from Atlantic City today in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania legalized gambling in 2004, and the opening of this casino has been long awaited. With 1,600 slot machines and 40 table games, Sugarhouse will very likely take away some business from the casinos across the border in New Jersey. Sugarhouse is the first legal gambling hall in the state.
This casino will be a huge benefit to the state of Pennsylvania; it is expected to generate over one billion tax dollars over the next five years. $1 million per year is going to local school districts. The casino has also created almost 1,000 jobs, 800 of which are full time. The typical dealer makes between $40,000 and $50,000 per year. Still, the casino has met some opposition. Groups and individuals who have rallied against the casino have largely resigned in the fight against the casino. Thursday’s grand opening is a somber event for these people. Rather than continuing to fight against the casino, many of the opponents have decided to promote issues such as awareness of gambling addiction.
When the casino opened its doors early Thursday afternoon, there were all ready 500 people waiting to enter. Still, the Philadelphia casino promises to be a controversial landmark in Pennsylvania.

Stomach irritation may result in a lack of desire to eat amongst infants. If symptoms persist for more than a few days, Abbott has recommended that a doctor be consulted.

NFL kickoff 2010
Last night was the beginning of the NFL season. It all started with the marching band and Harry Connick Jr. singing oh when the Saints come marching in. They then released the 2009 world championship banner in the Superdome.
The New Orleans Saints played the Minnesota Vikings. This was a repeat game of the NFC championship from last year. Brett Favre coming back for another season was one of the major headlines, not to mention Drew Drees the MVP player of the Super Bowl looking to continue in a repeat. What these two teams do this year is still unknown. These two teams are vying for the NFC championship again and both have great chances.
At the beginning of the game the New Orleans Saints scored really quick. After that, everything seemed just go into stall mode. Not a very exciting game for the first game the season, but I guess we’ll take what we can to get just get the NFL season going. Some big-name stars were playing last night including Brett Favre, Reggie Bush, and Drew Brees. Big things are happening in New Orleans, it’s just matter of whether their team can win another Super Bowl. In the end the New Orleans Saints beat the Minnesota Vikings 14-9.

American Idol Shakeup
It looks like there will be a shakeup in the world of American Idol for its upcoming tenth season. With judges Simon Cowell leaving at the conclusion of last season and Ellen DeGeneres announcing that she was leaving on July 29th, it seems like American Idol was already facing an extreme makeover.
Apparently, these changes were just the beginning. On July 31st, reports emerged that Kara DioGuardi had been fired from the show. The show’s producers reportedly wished to return to a three-judge panel and DioGuardi’s position was cut.
Fox, the broadcast company for American Idol, has not confirmed the replacements that are to take place, but sources have leaked that Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez will be rounding out the three judges along with original judge Randy Jackson.
There had been talk of Elton John coming on as a judge as well, but this rumor died down after Access Hollywood announced that he rejected a $33 million offer from the show. While Fox has not made the final judging panel official yet, it is expected to any day.
